Grammar 16.04.20 part1


Hope you are all ready with the following things before starting the lesson:

  • English Grammar book
  • covered English notebook with your name, class and section in the front.
  • write today's topic and date in your INDEX.
  • REMEMBER to write neatly in cursive handwriting.

  • The text in RED is to be written as it is in your language notebook.

Today, let's learn about NEGATIVE SENTENCES.

    *A sentence having not or no in it is called a negative sentence.

    Let's go through some of the rules:
     A. Compare the following sentences:

    1. I am sad.                                .............        I am not sad.
    2. We not tired.                          .............        We are not tired.
    3. The money was enough.       ............  The money was not enough  


    -When the verb is some form of be (is, are,am,was,were), we put not after the verb to make the sentence negative.


    B. Now compare these sentences:

    1. He has some money.          ..............   He has no money.
    2. We have a holiday today.   ..............   We have no holiday today.

    -When the verb is have, has or had, we use no to make the sentence negative.

    C. Compare these sentences: 

    1. She is skipping                 .............    She is not skipping
    2. Neelu can run fast            .............    Neelu cannot run fast
    3. They have arrived            .............    They have not arrived

    - When the verb is made up of two or more words, we put not after first word to make the sentence negative.

    D. Compare these sentences:

    1. Leave the room.             .........       Do not/Don't leave the room.
    2. Sit down.                        .........       Do not/Don't sit down.

    - To make a command sentence negative, we put do not/ don't in the beginning of the sentence.

    REMEMBER:

    Formation of negatives

    - is, are, am, was, were                ................    not after the verb
    - have, has, had                            ................   have/has/ had no
    - verb made up of two or more words .......... not after the first word
    - commands                                  ................  Do not/ Don't in the 
                                                                             beginning

    8. soundly was the baby sleeping
    Ans. The baby was sleeping soundly.

    17. Ma'am, I need to ask that why 'it is' not a complete sentence.... Because sometimes it can occur as a reaction to some questions like IS IT TRUE???? Answer IT IS.... I'm little confused ma'am... Ma'am Plz solve my problem.🙏

      1. Yes, your example sentence is a complete sentence: It is. A complete sentence must contain at least one main clause that contains an independent subject and a finite verb and has a complete meaning. Good read about the complete sentence.
