Topic- The Sentence (Class 4)

Lesson 1- The Sentence

Dear students
Welcome back!

Now, let's be ready with the following things before starting the lesson:

  • English Grammar book
  • covered English notebook with your name, class and section in the front.
  • write today's topic and date in your INDEX.
  • REMEMBER to write neatly in cursive handwriting.
Few instructions to be kept in mind while going through the blog:
  • The text in RED is to be written as it is in your notebook.
  • The text in GREEN is your homework which will be done in your notebook.
At the end of the lesson, you will be able to:
  • define a sentence
  • explain why correct sentence structure is important
  • use correct punctuation for each type of sentence.
Now let's start! Look at these pictures and read the groups of word written below them:

Each of these groups makes complete sense. Each of them is a sentence.

Let us look at a group of words arranged in two ways.
 detective           mystery         the         solved      the
This is just a group of words. They do not make sense.
Now read this group of words.

The detective solved the mystery.
This is a sentence. It has a meaning.
  • sentence is a group of words that makes complete sense.
The following groups of words below do not make complete sense because the words in them are not in proper order:
1. water a bring of glass
2. for is good milk health
3. talking is she loudly

We cannot call them sentences because they do not make complete sense. Let us put the words in each group in their proper order:
1. Bring a glass of water.
2. Milk is good for health.
3. We should drink milk daily.

Now, they have become meaningful. Therefore, they can be called sentences.

Now students, we should remember three things about a sentence.

POINTS TO REMEMBER
  • The words in a sentence are placed in their proper order to make complete sense.
  • A sentence always begins with a capital letter.
  • A sentence usually has a full stop (.), question mark (?), exclamation mark (!) at the end.
  • A sentence will always have a verb. The verb is the heart 💓 of a sentence.
Time for some practice now! Write down the following exercise in your notebook and try to do the questions on your own.

Q1. Rewrite the following groups of words as sentences. Begin each sentence with a capital letter. Put a full stop (.) at the end of each sentence.

1. holiday eid we a friday had for last
